A TEXTURE OF SOUND
Group of paintings based on the sound of the letters of the arabic consonantal alphabet (abjad)
I have often been asked why I chose this alphabet as a basis for this work. My selection of the Arab language had to do with the importance it has had in the language and culture of the Iberian Peninsula, and in particular, in Portugal.
The evidence of five centuries of islamic domination is sometimes scarce, but it is still very present in the Portuguese language of today, and my project intends to pay homage to this legacy.
Although the graphic form of each letter is visibly present, my intention was not to create a work of caligraphy. Instead, it is a simple visual expression of a sound.
