A TEXTURE OF SOUND
Group of paintings based on the sound of the letters of the arabic consonantal alphabet (abjad)
I am often asked why I chose this alphabet as the basis for this work.
My choice of the Arabic language is rooted in the profound influence it has had on the language and culture of the Iberian Peninsula — and in particular, on Portugal. Although the visible traces of five centuries of Islamic presence can sometimes be scarce, its legacy remains deeply embedded in the Portuguese language today. This project is, in part, a tribute to that enduring heritage.
While the graphic form of each letter is clearly present in the work, my intention was not to create calligraphy. Rather, each piece is a simple visual expression of sound.
